eLearning Africa - How South African Schools Bridged the Digital Divide
Africans have worked with us and our local partners to create their own innovative solutions for widening access to information technology in education and training for several years now. In the run-up to the continent’s most important event on ICT in education – eLearning Africa – we’re looking back on some educational success stories with our desktop virtualisation solutions in Africa.
South Africa’s Western Cape school system needed affordable access to computing technology to begin the process of providing over one million students in 1,500 schools with the computer skills needed to bridge the digital divide. The Khanya Project aims to deploy PCs into schools. The first stage of the project was to provide each school with a computer lab. But, the donated PCs proved to be unreliable and difficult to maintain. They turned to NComputing for a solution that harnesses the unused power of a PC to be shared among multiple users at the fraction of the cost of individual PC. This solution is much more reliable and simpler to install and maintain. The impact of the project is affordable and reliable computing technology that has extended school technology budgets and re-used the excess capacity of existing refurbished computers.
