NComputing Gives First ‘World Changer’ Award to New School Model that Targets Dropouts

NComputing recognizes a Florida-based charter school initiative seeking to reclaim disengaged youth

REDWOOD CITY, CALIF., November 17, 2008 – NComputing, the leading provider of ultra-low-cost computing appliances, has recognized Mavericks in Education Florida LLC with its inaugural World Changer Award. NComputing selected Florida-based Mavericks for their innovative education model that uses student-centric, computer-based learning to reengage high school dropouts. The World Changer Award was created to honor individuals and organizations that use NComputing technology to benefit society. Last year, there were over 100,000 high school dropouts in the state of Florida, and over 1.2 million students drop out of American high schools every year.

Mavericks aims to help dropouts obtain high school diplomas, as well as to deliver job training and job placement assistance. The unique educational model includes flexible schedules, educational mentors, supportive and comprehensive teams of educators, and a 1:1 PC-to-student ratio to. The schools are known as Mavericks High, D. Wade’s School to reflect the support and inspiration from professional basketball player and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.

“Our low-cost technology is revolutionizing how schools integrate computer-based learning into the classroom—and Mavericks uses computing to engage, educate, and empower young people at risk,” said Stephen Dukker, CEO and chairman of NComputing. “We are witnessing innovative applications of our technology around the globe and look forward to recognizing others for innovative thinking and beneficial applications.”

The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications only use a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing technology creates multiple virtual desktops from a single PC so that many users can tap the unused capacity and share it as if each person had their own computer. More than one million NComputing seats have been deployed by 20,000 organizations in more than 100 countries.

“We are deeply honored to receive this exceptional recognition award from a company led by such a remarkable visionary, Stephen Dukker,” said Mark Thimmig, CEO and president of Mavericks in Education. “Mavericks is a game changer within education, redefining high school education. Standardization in schools does not address the many learning styles and different intelligence strengths of today’s youth. We need customization and student-centric learning technology to reach all students and Mavericks’ program will break many of the common boundaries that have traditionally defined high school education. NComputing allows us to deliver a personal computing experience to each student in a cost-effective and environmentally beneficial way. This is truly a win-win partnership.”
