Linux Community Welcomes the NComputing $70 Cloud Desktop

NComputing brings cloud computing down to earth at CloudWorld conference with a perspective on low-cost endpoint devices

REDWOOD CITY, CALIF., July 22, 2009 - Cloud computing is being hailed as a disruptive technology that will improve business and IT productivity. But emerging cloud architectures still call for delivering the computing experience through dedicated PCs, which threaten to keep costs high. NComputing virtual desktops offer an economical alternative—a $70 endpoint access device that is ideal for cloud computing.

NComputing Senior Vice President Bill Platt will discuss an emerging class of low-cost endpoint devices based on NComputing technology during the CloudWorld Conference, which will be held Aug. 12-13, 2009 in San Francisco as part of the OpenSource World Conference. Mr. Platt will deliver his address, “Bringing Cloud Computing Down to Earth with Ultra Low-Cost Endpoints,” on Thursday, Aug. 13, in session SC4 at 1:15p.m.

NComputing will also demonstrate its $70 cloud desktops at booth 524. NComputing is the largest provider of virtual desktops in the world with more than eight million people using its solution every day in 140 countries. The Republic of Macedonia, for example, chose NComputing for its massive, 180,000-seat educational computing initiative, which is the world’s largest Linux-based virtual desktop program

Mr. Platt has more than 20 years of development experience in the high-tech industry. He leads NComputing's global engineering hardware and software development organization. Before joining NComputing, Mr. Platt was executive vice president of products at Wyse Technology, a leader in thin-client computing. Prior to joining Wyse, Mr. Platt was vice president of the operating platforms group at Sun Microsystems, and was a vice president of software responsible for the Java Enterprise System and Solaris products.

The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s computers are so powerful that the vast majority of applications use only a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing enables a single computer to be virtualized so that many users can tap the unused capacity and share it as if each person had their own computer. NComputing supports both Windows and the Linux platforms. Each user enjoys a full desktop experience by connecting their own monitor, keyboard, and mouse to an NComputing endpoint access device, which is then connected to the shared computer. Unlike other desktop virtualization solutions, the patented and highly-efficient NComputing desktops deliver rich multimedia and full-screen video.
