Social Enterprises Grow with Disruptive NComputing Technology

NComputing describes best practices to social entrepreneurs at SOCAP09: growing a for-profit business while making a significant social impact

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF., September 9, 2009 – One thousand attendees from 32 countries participated in the sold-out Social Capital Markets conference, which was held September 1st though 3rd in San Francisco. SOCAP brings together a broad ecosystem of funds, foundations, and for-profit and non-profit entrepreneurs that use business to make a positive difference in the world. As a sponsor and presenter, NComputing—the global leader in ultra low-cost computing—brought a compelling story of their disruptive innovation and business models. With over 10 million daily users of the company's technology, NComputing has revolutionized the economics of desktop computing with a solution that is affordable, green, and sustainable. In addition, as a for-profit company, NComputing is creating a thriving global network of entrepreneurs who sell and support the company's virtual desktops.

"NComputing and our resellers have brought computing to millions of people who never had it before. We have succeeded where no one else has in a scalable and sustainable way. The economics of NComputing's business model brings opportunity and profits to our resellers,” said Mark Beckford, vice president of global business development at NComputing. “In addition, NGOs and non-profits are also adopting our solutions because of their low cost and energy savings."

Beckford participated in a panel discussion on disruptive innovation and how disruptive business practices can lead to growth and social impact. He also spoke on the panel for ICT for development on how computer access can make a significant impact to those at the Bottom of the Pyramid.

The NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today's computers are so powerful that the vast majority of applications use only a small fraction of the computer's capacity. NComputing vSpace™ desktop virtualization software enables a single computer to be shared by many simultaneous users by tapping the unused capacity. Each user enjoys a full Windows or Linux desktop experience simply by connecting their monitor, keyboard, and mouse to an NComputing access device, which is then connected to the shared computer running vSpace. Unlike other desktop virtualization solutions, the patented and highly-efficient NComputing desktops deliver rich multimedia and full-screen video.

NComputing has customers in over 140 countries. The cost for the NComputing solution is as low as US$70 per seat, with typical savings of 75% on hardware, 75% on maintenance and 90% on electricity. For millions of people, this is the first time they have ever had access to a computer or the Internet. SOCAP09 attendees were able to see firsthand how well the NComputing systems work. The company provided email and Internet-access workstations, and supported the conference's social networking Connection Concierge program.
